Approximately fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then located multiple other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Local authorities said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official commented the incident made him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
