New research indicates that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
