Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
