The buzz around The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
