Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
